Dance Port Townsend (and Area) Calendar

DANCE COMMENTS, 1 July

– The new location for the 1 July Honky Tonk Polka Dot Dance is the McCurdy Pavilion on Fort Worden. See below the recommendations for dancing on asphalt and concrete.

– I hope this dance calendar is useful.
The Fort Worden’s Field Day at the Fort occurs tomorrow, Saturday, 2 July 2022, from 5 to 10:30 p.m., as per https://fortworden.org/things-to-do/calendar/. If you’d like to talk dance, or American Legion membership, or eat ice cream, I’ll be stationed at the American Legion booth (which will be between the Fiddlehead Creamery and NW Cold Treats booths) from about 4 to 7 p.m.       Cheers, Michael Maddox

– Vickie Townsend’s Line Dance Lessons have been changed from the Port Townsend Masonic Temple to the Quimper Grange on Sheridan Street (per a 30 June 2022 email from her). She will not be teaching in July but will start again in August.

July 1 (Friday) Honky-Tonk Polka Dot Dance at Fort Worden

Wear your polka dots.
– When: 1 July 2022, 8 p.m.
– Where: McCurdy Pavilion, Fort Worden (with a beer garden)
(note: This is a new location than was posted in April, which at that time listed the USO building.)
– Featuring the Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms Country Band with Video Works faculty cameos
– Tickets $10 ($15 if you are not wearing polka dots). Sold at the door only

This info from Vickie Townsend, for dancers going to this Polka Dot Dance:
“The Polka Dot Dance is tonight, and I’m planning on going, but it’s at the McCurdy pavilion instead of the USO building, which means that there is no wood dance floor. There are 2 places to dance there, if it’s outside, it’s on asphalt, and if it’s indoors there is a smooth concrete area. We shall see what happens, and where they set up the band. I have created these “Concrete shoes” where I used double stick tape to attach a flexible piece of plastic to the forefoot of each shoe. It lets me pivot on the concrete and works well. But dancing on surfaces like that isn’t ideal. The plastic is one of those thin cutting boards. Non dancers just don’t understand how much harder it is to dance on concrete or asphalt!”

10 and 24 July 2022 Sequim Elks Dances and East Coast Swing Lessons
Freia’s dance committee, from Sequim/Port Angeles, has been putting on bi-monthly dances at the Sequim Elks. They’ve recently decided to try offering hour-long beginning East Coast Swing pre-dance lessons from 4:45-5:45, with the dance beginning at 6:00. Ordinarily, pre-dance lessons are free with admission, but the committee wants to pay the various instructors for their time, so they are going to charge $5 per person. They want to start in July (10 and 24). Black Diamond Junction plays on the 24th, which is a great dance band that draws a big crowd.⸺ source:  26 June email from the Discovery Dance group which had received a request from Freia to advertise this dance initiative.

Cost: By donation. Your donation enables the Legion to book bands, DJs, and instructors.

Dress: nice casual

Discussion: For the purposes of this website, ballroom dance means variety.
The word “ballroom” scares some people whose experience with it is the exhibition-style that’s done on TV shows like Dancing with the Stars or American Idol, or the competition dance they see on U-tube.
Social ballroom dancing (which is the majority of ballroom dancing done around the United States), in contrast, is for fun, relaxed, social interaction, and all levels and styles of dancer are present.
What’s a good social ballroom dance night? When the band/DJ plays a variety of danceable music rhythms and tempos: East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, night club two step, waltz, rumba, cha-cha, foxtrot, country two step, hustle, tango–and of course, free-form dancing.
That’s our goal for ballroom -dance-designated nights: to book bands and DJs that play variety so that people can dance all flavors and stay on the floor all night if they want.
